The test minis are done, the warbands are chosen (mostly), and it’s time to start filling out that roster. Our Arena Challenge contestants are putting brush to mini with a fervor their angelic or devilish patrons would find endearing. What’s a Trench Crusade warband without some muscle to enact your will on the grimdark battlefields of 1914after all? You may notice that some contestants are showing off WIPs (Works in Progress) or may be absent entirely. Have no fear; they haven’t dropped out. Instead, the dreaded real-life responsibilities have gotten the better of them, but they will be back in the future. That’s the beauty of a Hobby Escalation league like this, especially with our Hobby Glory system. You’re allowed to miss deadlines; you just miss out on the Glory points if you do.

To see the full rules and guidelines for the Arena Challenge you can check out our first instalment. As a quick reminder, though, unlike a normal campaign of Trench Crusade, the only way for our participants to earn Glory points to spend on upgrades and mercenaries is with the Hobby Glorious Deeds table below. This is something we’ll be keeping track of for you (and them) during each instalment.

Hobby Glorious Deeds

The Faithful

New Antioch - Free State of Prussia

Adam Abramowicz - @tacticalpainter

When we had summer cookouts, my grandfather would always tell me, “Your eyes are bigger than your stomach, kid.” Turns out, I have the same problem with miniature painting. I get excited about theme and lore, conversions and ideas, and before long I’ve planned sixteen miniatures complete with names, backstories, and weapon loadouts. I only need ten.

The Blackwing Khanate has already fallen victim to it. The scheme has changed. The theme has evolved. The plan has grown. But this time, I think, it’s for the right reason.

I realized I had an opportunity to connect this warband to my old Imperial Guard project—the same one that featured the incredible Victoria Miniatures Rough Riders I helped consult on years ago. Suddenly it wasn’t just a warband anymore. It became part of a larger story.

Iron Sultanate - House of Wisdom

Adrian Phillips - @tabletoptitans

One of my main reasons for wanting to do the House of Wisdom was the immense kitbashing and converting opportunities! As a proper alchemist of the Sultanate I have been hard at work chopping, mixing, and blending a number of great kits including the Lions of Jabir, which I have digitally scaled for this haemonculus beastie!

For a more humanoid torso I grabbed the Anti-tank Communicant for the top of my bizarre centaur, and am taking care to dress him appropriately with various bits from the Sultanate accessory pack! I'm still thinking on what to do for the head... Here's to more prized creations in the future

Trench Pilgrims - Procession of the Sacred Affliction

Dave Taylor - @davetaylorminiatures

In the last month my preview prints have arrived for my Procession models, fresh from the Fortress Factory team. I have started working on them, but I was very keen to paint up the Anchorite Shrine conversion I presented last time around. This scheme was based very closely on a piece of artwork featured in the Carcass Front book, and it was great fun to paint up the volumes in each stage. I must note that I'll be painting up the various religious icons across the whole warband at the end of the "regular" painting. This will allow me to lock in on the approach and improve my freehand across the warband.

New Antioch - Free State of Prussia

Ian Huxley

After a recent trip to UKGE I picked up the Sniper Priests to add to the Prussian Warband. Painted in the same style as the rest of the warband, with the addition of Fair Skin from the historical range for the, well, skin.

New Antioch

Jake Krajeski - @buildpaintplay

The Winged Hussars of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth have been the most elite mounted fighting force in Europe since the early 1500s. With the expansion of threats, and the modernization of the Commonwealth's military, these legendary formations have expanded to add mechanized and armored infantry. While all members are brave, skillful, and intelligent, the strongest are chosen to join the Dragoons of the Piechota Wybraniecka, or "Chosen Infantry".

Typically armed with grenades, swords, shields, and a variety of firearms, they can be counted on to engage any foes they encounter.  Tenacious, cunning, and absolutely fearless, they can be counted on to carry out any orders for the Commonwealth and its allies.

New Antioch

Joey Jobes - @joseph.jobes

This month I painted up some of the most iconic models from the range: the Heavy Mechanized Infantry.

These models were surprisingly challenging! A majority of the minis are just flat armor panels, so I needed to do a lot of weathering, shading, glazing, and highlights to get these looking visually striking. For my rust and weathering here, I relied on lightly sponging on Mud Spatter from the Historical: WWII British collection and then very lightly brushing on thinned Rust from the same paint line. Additionally, I made a very light “wash” with 10 parts Speedpaint Medium and 1 part Periwinkle Purple Speedpaint and put it in the most recessed areas of the armor.

Next month I’ll be back to some infantry and hope to paint up the Shocktroopers that fill the trenches.

New Antioch

Jonathan Beveridge

I was looking forward to painting this model since I first saw our own Thomas paint one up last year.  I'll admit that I know close to very little lore and story about New Antioch and this skinny fellow as I sat at my table thinking, "What does this guy eat? Why would he wear a belt made of bullets?"  I'll endeavor to find out by the time my squad is fully painted.  Paint wise, I just picked up John Blanche Volume 3 and wanted to play with the desaturated pale colors.  I'm still having a love affair with Grimdark Shadow. If you haven't put that shade in your collection, please treat yourself.  No, seriously.

New Antioch - The Red Brigade

Rasmus Carstensen

This new Shocktrooper isn’t fully painted yet, as I’ve moved to batch painting. About 60% of my warband is painted but still needs a lot of layering work. With this one, I’ve introduced gold into the color scheme. I reserve this color strictly for holy iconography or rare equipment given to the higher-ranking soldiers of New Antioch.

The biggest thing is that I’ve switched to the Masterclass Brushes to paint from now on, and as a noob to the hobby, I’m amazed by the level of control they offer. This truly felt like a gamechanger for the goal I have in mind for this warband. I will say though; this can both be a blessing and a curse, as it has also emphasized just how bad I am at brush control.

New Antioch - Free State of Prussia

Sam Lenz - @samsonosmas

With my test scheme established on that first unit, the next move would be filling in those ranks.

The Stosstuppen are prevalent in the Prussian list and although my starting roster only includes 4, I added a 5th equipped with an SMG (another prevalent item) to the painting tray. The idea being to paint a little bit ahead of what I can afford on the battlefield, thus always being painted and immune to bad dice rolls. It could happen! To better ensure my fortune on the field, a custom Trench Cleric will also be in tow.  Aside from a roman shield and some putty, all the parts are from the plastic kits. Serious stuff!

New Antioch - Red Brigade

Tim Engleman

After finishing my test mini, I started batch painting most of the warband. This left me with a lot of half-painted minis, so I had to shift into gear and actually finish some! I'm saving the big guys for last, but I wanted to add some variety to the Yeoman. The gunslinging Lieutenant and Combat Engineer were too cool to pass up. I'm still experimenting with the bases, but I'm sure I'll have them figured out by next time.

The Fallen

Heretic Legion - Naval Raiders

Adam Loper - @tabletopminions

Working through the Heretic Naval Raiders - I really love the mix of metals and cloth on the main troopers. They're really fun to paint. I used some Fresh Rust on the metals BEFORE they were even primed so that the microparticles in that particular Fanatic Effects paint would show up as a texture on the metal parts later.

Court of the Seven-Headed Serpent - Sloth

Amy Ratcliffe - @amypaintslilguys

For my Hell Knight, I wanted to mostly use Speedpaint colours and metallics. I started with Speedpaint in Ochre Clay over the grey-primed mini to have a grimy undertone. Then I played with metallics, including Talos Bronze, Aztec Gold, and Enchanted Steel - different colours because I wanted the pieces to look mismatched. I finished with Grimdark Shadow and some splotches of Warpaints Fanatic Effects in True Blood and Grim Rust

Cult of the Black Grail

Courtney DeVries - @figuratively_speakingminis

The Cult of the Black Grail is spreading its disease and pestilence. The lumps and gore spilling from the bodies of its soldiers, of its demons of death, is consuming.

I have had such a fun time painting these gory models. The images of horror and just how I can make them interesting to look at, around all the wounds and gore, have been a fun challenge. I think that this Cult will bring victory!

Court of the Seven-Headed Serpent - Envy

Evil Dave Taylor - @davetaylorminiatures

Continuing the covetous theme for my Envy warband, I did some more digital kitbashing, and added mancatchers to both of my Hell Knights. They covet power, and these weapons represent their desire to capture their enemies and exert dominance over them. They are also deeply envious of the Brazen Bull and his sheer, brute power. They both wear helmets fashioned in the same style – created by digitally slicing off the Bull's head, scaling it down, and mashing it on to their torsos.

Heretic Legion - Naval Raiders

Felipe Crieghton - @theatomikdoctor

Beware all, Baron Brutalis has landed on the shores! After my last submission, I wanted to take these models in a different direction and embrace a more oceanic palette of blues and greens. I also continued experimenting with mixing metallic paints to create different bronze hues.

To achieve that nautical, grimy, weathered look, I leaned heavily on Military Shade and Voodoo Shade. I loved the character they brought to the metalwork and felt they suited the theme of these models perfectly.

I also have a good appreciation for strong contrast on a miniature - and I can rarely resist adding some red to a paint scheme - so, I pivoted on a few color choices and decided to mix Slaughter Red Speedpaint, Pure Red, & Lava Orange paint to create the vibrant pop I was after.

Court of the Seven-Headed Serpent

Jeremy Clark

For my color scheme on these guys, I needed to fight back the urge to paint the exact colors. By that I mean, "wood is brown, armor is silver." It's really easy to fall into that trap as an artist, but there's so much more to consider when creating a color scheme for a piece. So instead, what I did here was prime them all black, and then slowly layer on dry brushes of grey tones. I didn't go too heavy on the lighter side so as not to come off as concrete or stone materials, but instead I highlighted them with Polished Silver metallic, and touched everything up with True Blood to make them look dirty and grizzled.

Court of the Seven-Headed Serpent

Joachim McLaughlin - @mr_mclaughlin

Boots—boots—boots—boots—movin' up and down again!

There's no discharge in the war!

The warband of Qui ira sudant marches ever onward, largely helped by the lowly Yoke Fiends, whose only purpose in life is to toil for those better than them, and bring as much pain as possible upon the creation of God. They were painted mostly by paints from the four volumes of John Blanche Masterclass sets

Hopefully these pitiful beings can help Sudor reach his full demonic ascension, so they in the future can enjoy the company of the other nobles of the court, while sipping wine from the 7th circle of hell.

Court of the Seven-Headed Serpent - Sloth

Lasse Sell - @fantasticmapsstore

For my two Hell Knights, I used the same recipe for the armour as on my Yoke Fiend. Blood Thorn basecoat, Heavy Metal drybrush, Bloodmoon Red wash and then Cobalt Metal highlight. And... that's basically the whole model! Well, I painted the Ophidian Rifles brown and gold to separate them a bit from the rest of the color scheme, gave the chain mail some thinned down Fresh Rust and painted their furs black. The Orange glow from within their helmets was painted blending Blood Thorn, Moonbeam Yellow, Matt White, and Radiation Glow.

It was a challenge to replace the axe on the horned Hell Knight with a rifle, but a scalpel and a lot of patience will get you a long way!

Heretic Legion - Naval Raiders

Lyle Lowery - @lyle.lowery

My next two Naval Raiders are well underway! As you can see, the Anointed Heretic Raider is nearly done. I've also done the armour on the Heretic Captain and some work on his cape. I started out with Resplendent Red for the cape, but I found it to be too bright and saturated, overwhelming the other colours. So, I repainted it Blanched Berry from the John Blanche collection and worked my way up from that colour. This very desaturated red looks much better and doesn't distract from the rest of the model.

I also started planning and buying supplies for my display base. I want it to be small, so I won't have much room to work with, but there will be enough space for the vision I have in my mind: the raiders trudging inexorably across the coarse sand of a desolate beach, returning back into the sea once more.

Stéphane Nguyen Van Gioi - @scramasaxe91

In an attempt to seal up the exits of the North Sea, the Faithful developed the North Sea Mine Barrage. Something the Fallen were quick to capitalise on and twist to their own ends.

Trench Crusade is an incredible setting, with amazing potential for players to create unique stories about their miniatures, their warbands, and even the locations in which they're fighting. As each new piece of lore is revealed, new hobby opportunities arise from the depths.

I’ve started working on the rest of my warband in a batch. I started with Matt Black Colour Primer and then airbrushed up through Hazardous Smog, Leviathan Light, Caribbean Ocean, Tyrian Navy, and Hardened Leather for the armour. The skin is done in a similar method with Nomad Flesh, Barbarian FleshMurder Scene, and Hobgoblin Hue. This was all finished up with a coat of Satin spray

Next step is sponge and brush work—with effects! LOTS OF EFFECTS!!!

Tyler Mengel - @mengel_miniatures

What do you do when your 3D printer needs repair, and the replacement parts get lost in the mail? Well, really hope they show up soon, but also you pivot! Luckily for me, I had this preview copy of the awesome new Heretic Naval Raiders show up at my door, so the decision was made!

I decided to go for an “all black” scheme for my Raiders. It’s a nut I’ve been trying to crack for a while, because you still need to have enough variety in your black tones to be visibly legible. I went with three different shades of black, and some healthy rust on the armour. I also tried to go with different textures. Rougher on the cloth, flat and chipped on the armour, and smooth and shiny on the leather and tubes. I’m a sucker for limited palettes.

Also, proud to be the first to score Deserters and Traitors, all!
