Precision meets progression.
As your skills evolve, so do your expectations of your tools. The way a brush holds a point, responds to your movement, and distributes paint all play a role in how confidently you can hobby.
That’s where our new Masterclass Brushes come in.
Developed in collaboration with the master brush makers at da Vinci, this range is designed for painters who are ready to refine their technique and elevate their results. With premium materials and a focus on control, consistency, and responsiveness, Masterclass brushes are built to support your next stage as a painter.
What Makes Masterclass Different?
At the core of every Masterclass brush is high-grade Tobolsky Kolinsky sable hair. But this isn’t just about premium materials. It’s about how those materials are shaped into a tool specifically for miniature painting.
- A sharp, reliable point for precise detail work
- Balanced snap for controlled, responsive strokes
- Strong paint retention for smooth layering and blends
- A refined shape designed for miniature workflows—not general painting
Available individually in sizes 0, 1, and 2 or as a set of all three brushes, the range is built to cover everything from ultra-fine details to smooth basecoats and controlled layering.
Your Questions About Masterclass Brushes, Answered
Whenever we release something new—especially something as important as brushes—we know you have questions. Let’s get into the ones we’ve been hearing most.
Are these made from Kolinsky sable hair or red sable hair?
The Masterclass Brushes are made using high-grade Tobolsky Kolinsky sable hair, sourced from the Siberian weasel and developed in partnership with the famed brush maker, da Vinci.
Red sable is sometimes used as a broader, more accessible industry term for natural sable hair brushes. Kolinsky sable falls within this category but represents the highest grade within it. While the brushes are labelled as “red sable,” they are specifically made using Kolinsky sable hair, the premium tier within that classification.
How do these compare to other brushes?
We develop our products for performance, consistency, and usability. While we always aim to be as affordable and responsibly priced as we can, premium ingredients from trusted suppliers do come at a cost.
Through our collaboration with da Vinci we’ve developed a brush tailored specifically for miniature painting that is optimised for control, balanced snap and paint retention for layering and detail work that’s been designed with input from wargamers and professional artists.
While there are lower-cost alternatives on the market, Masterclass brushes are built to deliver reliable, repeatable results at a high level—not just affordability.
Has quality control improved?
We’ve made significant improvements across materials, production, and partner selection.
We now work closely with da Vinci, known for world-class craftsmanship which has allowed us to continue to invest in innovation. As with all natural hair brushes, performance can be influenced by transport, handling, and maintenance.
If a product defect occurs, our customer service team will always make it right.
What are the exact sizes?
Each brush has been carefully designed for precision and control in miniature painting:
- Size 0 – 6.9 mm length | 1.1 mm width
- Size 1 – 8.0 mm length | 1.3 mm width
- Size 2 – 10.1 mm length | 1.7 mm width
Together, they form a complete system—from fine detail work to smooth basecoating.
Why does the belly look smaller than expected?
The Masterclass brushes are designed specifically for miniature painting workflows. The slimmer belly is intentional and designed to enhance control, snap, and precision—key for miniature painting. Even with the slimmer shape, the natural hair still holds plenty of paint.
Fuller-bellied brushes can offer greater capacity and smoother flow, while slimmer profiles can provide quicker response and more direct handling. Both can form and retain a fine point; they simply behave differently.
This brush reflects a deliberate balance, favouring control and responsiveness without sacrificing paint-holding performance.
Why natural hair after promoting synthetics?
We understand this question, and it’s a fair one. Our goal is not to push one solution, but to serve different painter needs and preferences. Our synthetic ranges offer durability, accessibility, and innovation. Our Masterclass Kolinsky range serves painters who prefer natural hair for its performance characteristics.
By working with da Vinci—a partner with full control over sourcing and production—we are confident in offering a responsibly produced, high-quality natural hair option as part of a broader system.
